It is presented under three competencies describe the basic features of QPM (genetics, history and nutritional benefits of QPM); characteristics and adaptation of QPM varieties released in Ethiopia; and QPM seed maintenance procedures and preventing grain contamination. By learning this course, the graduates can get the wisdom and means to stand against the pervasive menace of undernutrition in Ethiopia using a very cheap and simple approach, biofortification.
Publication - A quality protein maize (QPM) manual for agricultural extension in Ethiopia(CIMMYT, 2017) Chere, A.T.; Kelemu, K.; Tadesse, A.; Dagne Wegary GissaThis manual introduces the key features of QPM, its nutritional benefits and importance, and techniques of production. It gives an updated information about the QPM varieties that are available for commercial production and their agro-ecological adaptation areas in the country, together with the agronomic practices required for grain and seed production. It also include a brief accounts of management of the most important pests attacking maize. The manual has been prepared to assist agricultural extension staff at grassroots level to train and advice farmers by explaining in simple terms about QPM technology and its nutritional benefits, and to concisely describe production techniques. It also enables to communicate a uniform and consistent messages to farmers and consumers in training and field days across the country.

El manual proporciona recomendaciones y ofrece una base para monitorear la calidad de los QPM. Los lineamientos se basan en la genética, el mejoramiento, las características y los beneficios nutricionales del QPM. El manual también incluye una lista de variedades QPM basadas en germoplasma del CIMMYT que han sido liberadas mundialmente. Asimismo, explica los conceptos de control de calidad, producción y sistemas de certificación de semilla; la definición de la calidad proteica y los métodos para analizar la calidad proteica del QPM; los procedimientos de muestreo para enviar muestras al laboratorio para que sean analizadas; y cómo encontrar un laboratorio de análisis de calidad. Incluye también recomendaciones para controlar la calidad tanto del grano como de la semilla reciclada de QPM. El objetivo de este boletín técnico es que sirva como documento de referencia para establecer estándares nacionales para el control de la calidad de la semilla y el grano en los países donde se produce y comercializa el QPM.
Publication - Heterosis and combining ability of highland quality protein maize inbred lines(Consiglio per la Ricerca e la sperimentazione in Agricoltura, Unità di Ricerca per la Maiscoltura, 2015) Gudeta Nepir; Dagne Wegary Gissa; Habtamu ZelekeQuality protein maize (QPM) cultivars contain higher levels of lysine and tryptophan as compared to non-QPM counterparts, and can minimize the risk of protein malnutrition among communities increasingly dependent on maize as their food staple. This study was undertaken to assess the performances of QPM hybrids, and estimate heterosis and combining ability effects of highland QPM inbred lines for grain yield, agronomic and protein quality traits. Hybrids of 20 inbred lines and two testers, and the parental lines were evaluated across three locations in Ethiopia. Significant variations were observed among the parents and the hybrids for almost all measured traits that allows the selection of preferred inbred lines and hybrids. Several hybrids showed desirable heterosis for most studied traits. Mean squares attributable to general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability effects were significant for most traits. However, the contributions of GCA sum of squares to the variation among the hybrids were larger than SCA sum of squares, suggesting that the traits were conditioned mainly by additive gene effects. Inbred lines L12, L17, L19, and L20 had desirable GCA effects for grain yield, whereas L12 and L13 were the best general combiners for protein quality traits. Hybrids L17 x 142-1eQ and L20 x 142-1-eQ showed most desirable perse performances and SCA effects for grain yield. Based on grain yield SCA effects, most inbred lines used in the study were grouped into distinctive heterotic patterns. This study indicated the possibility of developing highland QPM germplasm with acceptable grain yield, agronomic and protein quality traits.

Publication - Quality Protein Maize (QPM): a guide to the technology and its promotion in Ethiopia(CIMMYT, 2015) Chere, A.T.; Dagne Wegary Gissa; Tadesse, A.; Tadesse, B.; Bantte, K.; Friesen, D.; Prasanna, B.M.This guide book introduces the nutritional benefits of QPM over conventional maize varieties and presents a brief overview of its historical development. It also provides information on QPM varieties available for commercial production in different agro-ecologies of Ethiopia and the agronomic management practices required for seed and grain production. It further presents a general guide on how to establish field demonstration plots and conduct field days on QPM varieties. It is meant to serve as a reference for extension experts, farmers and other stakeholders who are involved in the production, demonstration, and extension of QPM in Ethiopia. To some extent, it would be a useful source of information to health professionals who are involved in health extension, and to students and teachers in agricultural training centers such as Agricultural, Technical and Vocational Educational Training (ATVET) colleges.
