Abstract
Description
The Sustainable Agrifood Systems Approach for Sudan (SASAS) is a USAID funded CIMMYT- led agricultural development initiative operating in a difficult context because of the disruption caused by the explosion of Sudan’s conflict on April 15,2023 leading to a widespread humanitarian and economic crisis, both, within the country and in the region.
SASAS was cocreated by USAID, CIMMYT and Partners through three workshops to promote small-holder agricultural production and incomes in Greater Khartoum, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States. When the insecurity resulted from April 15th, 2023, conflict; SASAS’ implementation process was disrupted. As a result, a strategic shift on project locations took place with the dropping of Greater Khartoum and an addition of five states. SASAS’ implementation faces several challenges resulting from the conflict. However, the SASAS’ partners are adapting and pivoting their plans to be able to reach smallholder farmers. In addition, SASAS’ strategic changes in approach include working in a regional context and with humanitarian partners to respond to the ongoing crisis.
