International collaboration for pest management: On stopping an invasive pest of stored maize
Hannah Quellhorst completed a B.S. and M.S. in Entomology at Purdue University. She recently completed a Ph.D. in Stored Products Entomology at Kansas State University, co-advised by Drs. Rob Morrison (USDA-ARS) and Kun-Yan Zhu (KSU). Her research focuses on improving the management of maize both domestically (USA) and internationally. Her interests include global food security, international development, women empowerment, insect biochemistry and physiology, and insect behavior. In the future, she hopes to focus on humanitarian science through a career in Entomology. Ultimately, she hopes to apply her skills to fight world hunger.

For the sixth webinar on September 27, Dr. Kaushik Majumdar, Director General, African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI), will present. Dr. Majumdar, a native of India, obtained his M.Sc. degree in Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science from BCKV University, India. He received his Ph.D. in Soil Mineralogy/Soil Chemistry from Rutgers University, USA. Dr. Majumdar has worked as a Soil Mineralogist at the Potash Research Institute of India (PRII), and later, as the Deputy Director of Eastern India and Bangladesh for the Potash & Phosphate Institute of Canada-India Programme; and as the Director, South Asia Program of International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI).

For the fifth webinar on May 23, Dr. Daanish Mustafa, Professor in Critical Geography, Department of Geography, King’s College London, will present. Dr Daanish Mustafa obtained his BA in Geography from Middlebury College, USA, his MA from University of Hawai'i Manoa, and his PhD in Geography from University of Colorado. He has taught at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and then at the University of South Florida, St Petersburg, before finding his intellectual home in the Department of Geography. While at King's, he has received the School of Social Science and Public Policy excellence in teaching award.

Dr. Nese Sreenivasulu is the head of research center, provides scientific leadership for International Rice Research Institute (IRRI’s) research on grain quality and nutrition program deploying enabling technologies in the discipline of biochemistry, food science, genetics and genomics. He led the team involved in establishing regional capacity to establish Center of Excellence for Rice Value Addition (CERVA) at IRRI South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC) in India to offer frontier research platform with wide-array of services to support grain quality, nutrition and food safety aspects.

For the third webinar on February 28, Dr. Parthiba Basu will present. Dr. Parthiba Basu has a Ph.D. in Ecology and is a Professor at the Department of Zoology, University of Calcutta. He heads the Centre for Agroecology and Pollination Studies founded in 2012 at University of Calcutta. His research interest is biodiversity and ecosystem functioning along ecological gradients- particularly in the agricultural landscape. A major research focus has been the diversity of pollinators and their ecosystem service delivery in agro-ecosystems.

The TAFSSA CGIAR Initiative is hosting a series of webinars to highlight research from South Asia on food security, sustainable healthy diets, farmer livelihoods and resilience, and land, air, and groundwater conservation. For the second webinar on January 25, the UPAVAN team presented results from the trial in Odisha, India. Maternal and child undernutrition have adverse consequences for pregnancy outcomes and child morbidity and mortality, and they are associated with low educational attainment, economic productivity as an adult, and human wellbeing. ‘Nutrition-sensitive’ agriculture programs could tackle the underlying causes of undernutrition. The UPAVAN trial has built critical evidence around strengthening agriculture for improved nutrition outcomes. The presenting UPAVAN team included LSHTM (lead); Institute for Global Health, UCL; Digital Green, D-COR; VARRAT, Ekjut; and John Snow Research and Training Institute.
